Penn State Officials Go to Jail for Complicity to Cover Up Child Abuse by Coach Sandusky

Not Much Time – But These Are White Collar, White Men,  Well Connected Criminals – Didn’t Expect Much

When senior Penn State officials learned that a football coach was molesting children they turned their backs on the children.  After all, the reputation of the football team was at stake and at Penn State football has the highest calling.  Now those officials are going to jail.

Former Penn State officials Tim Curley, Gary Schultz and Graham Spanier were all sentenced to jail time Friday for failing to alert authorities to the allegations against ex-football coach Jerry Sandusky, allowing the now-convicted serial predator to continue molesting boys for years.

Okay, not a lot of jail.

All three were convicted of child endangerment. Schultz, the former university vice president, could serve a minimum of two months in jail and a maximum of 23 months. Curley, the former university athletic director, could serve a minimum of three months in jail and maximum of 23 months. And Spanier, the former university president, could serve a minimum of two months and a maximum of 12 months. All three are also poised to have house arrest after the jail time.

Yes if these same people had been low income minorities they would be rotting in prison for a long time.  But still the fact that they are going to do time at all is a big victory for the rule of law.  And maybe, just maybe in the future men like these will get their just desserts.  And we don’t mean pie.
